Reality My Ass!

The discovery channel has a new show they’ve rolled out (pun intended) called “The Devils Ride.” They’ve marketed it as a “reality” show about an “outlaw” bikers club based in San Diego. First off, I’m from San Diego and San Diego is about as outlaw as Beverly Hills. Second, just a few minutes into the program and the term “reality” seems more like sarcasm than it does a description for this show. It’s obviously scripted. Thirdly, if they are such outlaws, why are they doing a reality show?

Oohh Mugs and T-shirts for sale? That’s some serious outlaw shit right there.
Watch how they throw light bulbs against the wall! Scary.
I use to have respect for The Discovery channel but after watching The Devils Ride, I’ve lost most of it. I know that there really isn’t such thing as reality TV except for the news (maybe) but this is blatantly bad television that would be more at home on TruTV or Bravo (The Real Housewives of Outlaw Bikers anyone?). I know Television is a business and they need to turn a profit to stay on the air but The Devils Ride? This is how they plan to stay in business?
I loved Discovery for their educational, nature, science and technology programing but with the Devils Ride, I fear a trend has started on their network. A trend towards gratuitous scripted fake reality. Well at least I still have The Science channel.
Shame on you Discovery! Shame. On. You!
