A Nation of Sheep Breeds a Goverment of Wolves

A couple years back my Dad got his first iPhone. This was quite an upgrade for a man who’s only computer experience has been with a calculator. It’s been quite a learning curve but he’s finally getting a handle on email. It’s great to see him stepping into the 20th century. He still may have a whole century to go before he catches up but you have to crawl before you walk. Baby steps. The down side to all this is that he learned about the email forwarding button.

Usually I ignore his emails because it’s either religious drivel or some right wing political bullshit but his latest forwarded gem caught my eye.

The title of this literary masterpiece was “Go Dutch” of which the true meaning is now just hitting me because going Dutch is a term used when a dating couple decides that in the interest of independence and individualism, each person will pay for themselves. The contents of this email were in fact not about individualism but a dismantling of a multicultural society for a more Pro Dutch one. Don’t worry, you’ll understand what I’m talking about soon enough.

As I mentioned I rarely even read these forwards and I even more rarely respond to them but this particular email was begging for a dose of logic and reality. But before we get there, let me provide a few lines taken directly from the email, spelling errors and all.

“Go Dutch
The Netherlands , where six per cent of the population is now Muslim, is scrapping multiculturalism:
The Dutch government says it will abandon the long-standing model of multiculturalism that has encouraged Muslim immigrants to create a parallel society within the Netherlands .

Countries like Holland Canada the UK and Australia have an established way of life that actually works, so why embrace the unworkable? If Muslims do not wish to accept another culture, the answer is simple; “STAY WHERE YOU ARE!!”

Let’s Take a Stand!!!
Borders: Closed!
Language: English or French only!
Culture: Constitution, is the Bill of Rights!

I’m all for national pride and encouraging immigrants to immerse themselves in the culture they have voluntarily found themselves in. I’m also for encouraging immigrants to learn the language of preference for the country they now call home. But we must remember one thing. Practically every first world nation is a nation of immigrants for which with out, most of us would not be here today. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong but the email my father so thoughtfully forwarded to me seems hypocritical in a way that is bordering on retarded. Not that my dad is retarded. Far from it. He’s a smart, hardworking self-made man to be admired. He went from a poor Idaho logging town where I was born to owning a home and business in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the United States. So he knows a little something about making it in this country. His one down fall though is his fox news, tea party education of the past decade or so.

Now, back to the email. The entire message was about getting rid of multiculturalism but at the end the author writes.

“A Nation of Sheep, Breeds a Government of Wolves!”

To me this means that if you only follow the masses or in this case government, then you will be eaten alive by said mass or government. In the beginning of the email it was about the Dutch people being tired of Muslims and their multicultural ways. What they did is get rid of the long standing multicultural society for a single Dutch society. In short they want everyone to be the same, talk the same and dress the same. That’s fine and dandy but if that isn’t a nation of sheep, then I don’t know what is.

As I said, there is nothing wrong with national and cultural pride but the author is a hypocrite. What it seems like he’s telling us is; Don’t be a sheep, but do follow everything you are told, like a good little sheep. To which I respond;

Careful what you believe in, less you become one of those sheep. Does that make sense?
